Naturopathic Psychiatry

Naturopathic Psychiatry: what is it and how can it help you?

At Natural Path Healthcare we believe that psychiatry should be more than a five minute visit and a prescription.

Naturopathic psychiatry is an integrative approach to psychiatric care, incorporating naturopathic therapies with conventional psychiatric medications and care when necessary. In these sessions we take the entire person into account, looking at how physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of being play into mental health. Additionally, naturopathic psychiatry gets to the root cause of the problem rather than simply treating symptoms. We utilize a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach that takes into account various aspects of your life, from past influences on mental health, to current ones. The biopsychosocial model explores the interconnectedness of your biological, psychological, and socio-environmental circumstances, and their impact on your well being. We discuss your social and family history, lifestyle, and health history, among other factors, in our exploration of your life experience and mental health.

Naturopathic psychiatry incorporates naturopathic medicine modalities such as botanicals, supplements, nutrition, counseling, and lifestyle treatments, as well as pharmaceutical interventions when necessary. Together we explore your mind, body, and spirit, and treat all aspects of your being.

When it comes to mental health, it is often important to test for deficiencies to rule out physiologic causes/contributors to mental health disruption. Many individuals who have been through conventional psychiatric care have tried countless medications with limited success. We can test to determine which medications are ideal for your specific genetics.

Conditions Treated: Here is a list of some common concerns treated with naturopathic psychiatry:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • ADHD/ADD
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Technology addiction
  • Behavioral addictions
  • Substance use disorders and addiction

*As a naturopathic doctor licensed in Washington state, I do not prescribe controlled substances. Controlled substances are those medications with higher potential for abuse. Examples of controlled substances include: stimulant medications, narcotics, and benzodiazepines.

Why might you choose naturopathic psychiatry in place of or to complement conventional psychiatry?

  • For an integrative approach to address your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs
  • To try addressing your mental health needs without prescription medications **
  • For complementary treatments alongside medications, such as botanical medicine, nutrition and dietary recommendations, lifestyle modifications, and more
  • Chronic or persistent mental health issues disrupt your quality of life
  • Conventional methods have not proved successful in your mental health journey

**Sometimes medications are the most appropriate treatment, each patient’s needs will be assessed individually and medications will be prescribed as appropriate on a case by case basis.
